All living things take in energy to survive, to keep functioning, to grow, reproduce and keep moving forward, but some living things do this in different ways than others.
Animals are heterotrophs, and plants are autotrophs.
A heterotroph is an animal that can’t make its own food. They need to eat often, and are much more dependent on food than plants are. Heterotrophs convert their food in to energy so they can move.
An autotroph is a plant that can make its own food by using energy sources (e.g. The sun; water; carbon dioxide) and converts it in to it’s food. This process is called photosynthesis.
Does this mean that humans are heterophs, because of our need to eat every three days without collapsing? Or are we autotrophs, because we grow our own food? Science has categorized human beings as heterotrophs.
